What is Laser Marking?

What is Laser Marking?

Laser marking is a marking technique that uses a focused laser beam to modify the surface of target materials. As a manufacturing technology, it employs concentrated light to alter material properties without removing substantial amounts of base material.

The laser beam is emitted from the laser oscillator, scanned by mirrors known as galvanometers, and focused onto the workpiece through a focusing lens to create markings by modifying the surface. Since laser marking uses light to change the target surface, it delivers higher wear‑resistance compared to ink‑based marking solutions, and the marks will not fade over time.

Unlike alternative marking methods, laser marking machines apply controlled energy to modify surface features. Depending on parameter settings, the beam forms marks through oxidation, annealing, or minimal material removal. Thanks to its great versatility, it serves both decorative and industrial applications.

Key Advantages of Laser Marking

Laser marking produces permanent markings. These marks resist fading, scratching and abrasion even under harsh working conditions. Such outstanding durability ensures critical information remains legible throughout the entire service life of products.

High‑speed performance makes laser systems highly popular in high‑volume factory environments. Modern laser marking machines can mark thousands of components per hour with consistent output for every part. This high efficiency cuts costs compared to traditional manual processes and boosts overall throughput.

It is also an eco‑friendly manufacturing solution that supports enterprises’ green initiatives. Laser marking requires no ink, chemicals or solvents that generate waste, which helps reduce operating costs while being environmentally sustainable.

Components of a Laser Marking System

The laser source acts as the core component of any marking system. Fiber lasers deliver optimal performance for metal processing; UV lasers are best suited for plastics; CO₂ lasers excel at processing wood and leather. Generally speaking, higher power from the same laser source brings faster marking speed.

Control software governs the entire marking workflow. Modern systems allow operators to import designs, adjust parameters and monitor production with ease. This level of automation saves labor time and guarantees consistent marking results.
